Artist Alexander Millar embraces the gadgie life

After decades of success, UK artist Alexander Millar, renowned for his Gadgie character, is embarking on a new chapter by closing his Newcastle Gallery on Grey Street this summer. This change is not a farewell; instead, it reflects his desire to step back from the daily demands of gallery life and explore fresh artistic ventures.

The Newcastle Gallery will close when the lease ends in July, but Millar’s Glasgow Gallery will continue to operate, celebrating his Scottish roots and the strong connection his art has with that city. He plans to maintain his presence in the art world through online sales and pop-up exhibitions, ensuring collectors and fans have ongoing access to his work.

“I’m not retiring – just slowing down a little,” Millar shares. “The Newcastle Gallery has been an incredible part of my journey, but this change allows me to focus more on painting and connecting with people.” He is excited to dedicate more time to his craft, celebrating the spirit of the Gadgie along the way.” Millar’s art has resonated deeply with people across Newcastle and beyond, capturing the essence of everyday life and the characters in his hometown. He adds, “The city has given me so much. This isn’t the end – I’ll still be around for events and enjoying coffee in my favorite haunts.”

To commemorate this transition, he plans a series of pop-up events where fans can engage with his artwork in person. He is also hosting a ‘semi-retirement’ sale starting on 15th March, providing collectors with a final chance to purchase artwork from the gallery. In this evolving landscape, Millar recognises the importance of embracing technology. “We live in an online world, and I’m looking forward to connecting with people globally,” he says. As he travels and finds new inspiration, he assures that Newcastle and Glasgow will forever be part of his artistic identity. “This shift is about celebrating everything we’ve built and enjoying the creative freedom ahead.”
